Community Safety and Transport Management departmental Traffic Officials and SAPS Mahikeng Police Station operation was quite a stunner and yielded the desired outcome as visibility and presence of the peace officers was taken to another level recently.

It was unfortunate to the motorists who misbehaved and whose conduct on the road had to be harshly dealt with through heavy penalty and fines imposed. .
The following is the statistics of the lock down operation that was particularly focused on Drunken Driving held from the 01 – 03 November 2019.
The operation was conducted by 22 Officials that consist of 1 Control PI, 3 Senior PI and 18 ProvincialInspectors. The regiment was led by Control Provincial Inspector Mtshengu. The members in this operation were pulled from various departmental traffic stations across the province joint by SAPS Mahikeng Police Station.

The impact report of the operation is as follows: 23 Summons issued amounting to R23 900.00;12 for failure to produce driving license, 7 for driving vehicles without valid registration and license, 1 for driving passengers without a permit and 3 for not buckling up the seatbelt and 35 Drunken drivers were arrested in the process.

"We are putting this 24/7 shift approach to law enforcement to the test and I can attest that it is definitely working. We operated particularly from 19h00 to 07h00 the next morning. By that time motorists do not expect us on the road, actually, we took the drunken drivers by surprise. Some complained that we spoilt the rugby world cup celebrations as we locked them behind bars. We changed spots, we focused on town exit/entrance check points. Known hot-spots and drinking concentration places were on our radar as we also adapted our roving techniques and hit the unsuspecting drunken drivers hard. We are going this route now, until road safety is complied with, especially now that the festive season is upon us" Remarked Mtshengu.

More of these sting operations will be conducted in and around major towns and cities in the province.
